The old Ottoman town, since the war, has been the theater of
many kinds of massacres: the market, the bakery, and public
water sources are the favorite targets of the Bosnian Serb
Army. Serbs are all around, in a position to see every
move in the city. With heavy artillery and numerous soldiers,
they make the rain and the sunshine of Sarajevo. When the
Serbs are quiet, in between periods of shelling, people leave
their shelters and start to look for food, water, and
combustibles for energy. Some try to fix the damage, and
organize their life. Others are in the streets and on cafe
terraces drinking some juice made of powder and water.
56. What would your family like to own that you think
would make your lives better?
All of the people of Sarajevo have the same wish: we want
peace. We hardly can imagine what life will be like after the
war. We all wish to be free to move in and out of the town.
Arina and Nedzad would like to start all over again; we don't
know where, but we would like to get back to the normal life
we had before: a job, living in our own house, with modern
furniture (TV, video, and stereo) and one more child.
57. Do you have any savings or security?
Before the war Lokman had money on the side and a small
monthly pension of $15(US). Because of the break-up of
Yugoslavia, and Yugoslavian banks, all the money that people
saved, disappeared. Bank officials just announced that they
were out of money.
58. When and how are you planning for retirement?
Lokman retired 5 years ago. Since that time, he practices
acupuncture as a hobby.
59. How would you make your children's lives better?
All Nedzad wants, the most, is peace and freedom for his
daughter Nadja.
60. What kind of future do you see for your children?
People are all living with the great hope of peace, but
everyone is deeply pessimistic about the future of Sarajevo.
